Project Objectives

The main scientific and technological objectives of the project are the following:

  • Development of new and improved bioconversion processes based on the exploitation of microorganisms and enzymes. Application of combinations of microorganisms and/or enzymes for the value upgrading of different renewable sources and (agri-)industrial waste streams. (S&T research progress to be assessed at the end of 12M (General Assessment Clause) and 18M).
  • Improved routes to biobased building blocks (also called intermediates or platform chemicals) as starting materials for the production of specialty biopolymers and biosurfactants. (S&T research progress to be assessed at the end of 18M and 24M (Mid-term Assessment)).
  • Functionalization of carbohydrate-based materials (oligo- and poly-saccharides) to yield innovative surface-active materials. Development of sugar-fatty-acid-ester (SFAE) bio-surfactants through enzyme-catalyzed synthesis. (S&T research progress to be assessed at the end of 24M (Mid-term Assessment)and 36M)..
  • Development of sustainable processes for the production of novel biopolymers (i.e., polyesters, alginates, chitosan). Structural modification of biopolymers to obtain functional biomaterials. (S&T research progress to be assessed at the end of 24M (Mid-term Assessment)and 36M).
